Three things to remember when you're getting a foot tattoo...

1) Choose a reputable artist whose work you're familiar with. Go to a site like Chopper Tattoos (they are fantastic -- I wouldn't recommend a pay site unless they were amazing, and these guys are) browse the artist portfolios, and find one in your area whose work resonates for you. It's important that you respect the tattoo artist AS an artist before you let them create a permanent artwork on your body.

2) Know what you want. Find a tattoo design that is absolutely perfect before you decide to have it tattooed on you, and make sure it's unique -- the tattoo artist that you choose should be able to help you with this. They can customize a tattoo design for you, and it's all right to ask them to.

3) Make sure that the artist is using sterilized equipment, has a portfolio of their work available for you to look at, and that you don't get a shady vibe from them. Don't let anybody with a shady vibe poke you with sharp stuff -- always a good rule of thumb.

This is a beautiful, and extremely recent, foot tattoo. I like this one quite a bit -- it's a very nice, delicate design.

People say that foot tattoos hurt more than most tattoos. I think this is absolutely true -- there's not a lot of fat there, and fat is what cushions the needle and keeps it from hurting too much. Not to mention the extremely dense ennervation down in the feet.

But really, is that a big consideration when you're getting a tattoo? It's something you're going to have for the rest of your life -- what's a few hours of pain, in the grand scheme of things, when you wind up with a freakin' sweet tattoo?

This is totally sweet. I have seen a lot of floral tattoos on feet, and usually they're just a band that goes around the ankle -- I like how this one snakes around. It's really delicate and nice.

Lovely! Swallow tattoos traditionally mean that their wearer will always return home. So the fact that they're on feet is particularly poignant.

While not a video of a foot tattoo, this is a pretty important thing to keep in mind when you're going to go get a tattoo -- if the tattoo artist is actually watching television while he's tattooing people...you might want to find another tattoo artist. Yikes.

Found a great article on BMEink -- a fantastic resource for any tattoo information you could need -- on getting a foot tattoo.

She was told: "You know that's gonna hurt like a motherf*&er" -- which seems to be the accepted wisdom around foot tattoos. Any tattoo that doesn't have a lot of fat underneath it is, in fact, very likely to hurt like a motherf*&er. And there are a lot of nerves down there in the foot.
